DEX THE PASSION
Dex is a Canton city native coming straight out of the state of Ohio with a unique love and passion for music. His talent is beyond typical; versatility is no match. Concepts and catchy chorus structure is a walk through the park. He has recorded nearly 200 Pro Tools ready songs. Seeing and hearing his work is a phenomenal experience.
Darrik "Dex" Curry was raised in a house full of the females which included: 3 older sisters and his single mother. His mother had to do what she could to survive and provide for her 4 children. His father was in and out of his life randomly until Dex became a teenager and disappeared after that. “My upbringing is just like most people coming from the hood or poverty… whatever you wanna call it. What makes me different from others is that I didn't use my past as an excuse. I use my past for motivation and to put all that negative energy into something positive. Instead of running to the streets for love, I ran to the beats." says Dex.
When asked what makes his music so different, Dex replies, “My music has no genre, it has feeling. My music is bipolar, it has many different personalities. It's kind of unpredictable and it be the stuff that I think the streets won’t like that the streets do like and vice verse for my other audience's. I just get in there and do what I feel. After recording in different studios for so many years, I just found a comfortable spot to zone out in my mind and get lost in the instrumentation of the music. It's like an unexplainable high,” he say's jokingly with a smile.
Dex has done songs with artists such as David Banner, Jody Breeze, Gucci Mane, Bizzy Bone, The Outlawz, Billboard chart- topper Tech N9ne and Strange Music's recording artist, Big Krizz Kaliko. He has also performed in various shows that have led to a large following in the Midwest, Eastern, and Southern regions. As a teen, Dex was in one of the most talented and well known groups in his city. Many people followed in their foot steps, younger and older, by just being inspired by their legacy. While he was in the group, they covered a lot of ground performing. One of his many shows included a performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Recently, as a solo artist, Dex completed a tour with Bizzy Bone, taking him to untapped grounds ripping up the stages in many major cities.
Dex’s musical influence was TuPac.” TuPac has been deceased for over a decade and his music is still relevant, babies having babies, welfare, planes falling from the sky, people having and catching AIDS, police corruption, all that is still goin on in the hood and they still don't care for us. I still ride and relate to All Eye's On Me. That's a classic, he's a legend, and we need more positive music in this world to get us through our day to day struggle. It ain't always about clubbing and blowing money. That's why I go to labels and they like my music, but I leave with no deal because they are scared to take a chance. They want to hear something that sounds like what's already out there and that ain't me because I'm a breath of fresh air for real rap music.”
In Dex’s own words, “I dedicate my music to anyone who has had any influence on my life whether good or bad. I don't care if I only change or motivate one person with my music, I'm good personally. I'm still young and I've been to every city, every hood. That's nothing at the end of the day, because I have a lot of homie's dead, in jail, on drugs or doing Lord knows what. I'm against all odds when it comes to my music. I'mma make it, I got to.”
